Safety Questions, Answered

Fixed Ladder Lockout

The safety systems, the lockout rules and the weld quality that keep fixed ladders safe — answered with our build data and the code numbers.

What makes a fixed ladder safe?

Four things: engineered fall protection (cage, PFAS or a ladder safety system), correct climbing geometry (rungs at 280 mm pitch, 500 mm width), weld quality to ISO 5817, and the documentation that proves compliance — DoC, MTC 3.1 and structural calcs. We build all four into every order.

What is fixed ladder lockout?

Lockout is the practice of physically preventing access while a ladder or its landing is being serviced. That means a lockable access point — usually a swing gate or hatch at the base or top — that can be tagged out under a lockout/tagout procedure. We supply lockable gates as an option on any build.

What fall protection does a fixed ladder need?

Under OSHA 1910.27, a fixed ladder over 24 ft installed after Nov 19, 2018 needs a personal fall arrest system or a ladder safety system — a cage alone no longer satisfies. Under 24 ft, a cage or a ladder safety device is the common choice. We quote both so your site picks what fits the code that governs it.

When does the safety cage start?

Our cages start at 2.2 m (7–8 ft) above the base of the ladder, per the 1910.27 convention, and extend 42 in above the top landing. The Φ700 mm hoop diameter and hoop pitch are set to the standard, and the cage is welded to the stiles, not bolted on as an afterthought.

What is a ladder safety system?

A ladder safety system is a rail-guided fall arrest device that rides a fixed rail beside the rungs. It is the modern alternative to a cage and satisfies the OSHA rule above 24 ft. We build the rail into the ladder at the factory and quote the compatible slide or sleeve with it.

What weld quality do you guarantee?

Structural welds — rung-to-stile, cage hoop and bracket joints — are made to ISO 5817 class C or better. Welding Procedure Specifications are documented for each joint type, and the welder qualifications are part of the quality file that ships with the order.

What safety features can be added?

Lockable swing gates, hatch guards, rest platforms, well enclosures, PFAS rails and ladder safety devices are all available. Every feature is a quoted line item on the same order — so the safety package is decided before production, not improvised on site.

The Fall-Protection Toolbox

Four Ways We Make the Climb Safe

Choose the protection that matches your height and the code that governs your site.

Safety Cage

Φ700 mm hoops from 2.2 m. The classic protection for vertical runs up to 24 ft.

PFAS Rail

A fall-arrest rail built into the ladder — required above 24 ft on new installs.

Ladder Safety Device

A rail-guided slide that follows the climber — the modern cage alternative.

Lockout Access

Lockable swing gates and hatches for lockout/tagout during maintenance.

Fixed Ladder Safety Configurations

Fixed Ladder Safety Options & Configurations

The safety package is a configuration choice — here are the three most specified ways to protect the climb.

Fixed ladder safety cage — steel fixed ladder with Φ700 safety cage

Caged Safety

The Φ700 mm safety cage with base bell — the traditional protection for runs under 24 ft.

Fixed ladder safety cage — stainless steel fixed ladder with safety cage detail

Cage & PFAS-Ready

Cage up to the threshold with a PFAS rail above — the transition configuration for new tall installs.

Fixed ladder safety — aluminum fixed ladder guard option

Guards & Gates

Guard protection around the climb plus lockable gates for lockout/tagout — safety beyond the fall system.

Quick Answers

Common questions

What is a fixed ladder lockout?

A lockable gate or cover that blocks access during maintenance or outage — we supply lockable swing gates at ladder landings.

What PFAS systems do you provide?

Sliding-sleeve ladder safety systems (PFAS rails) that arrest falls, mounted on the ladder and supplied with a structural calc.

When are rest platforms required?

Every 50 ft (15 m) of climb per OSHA 1910.23(d), with the cage or rail continuing through the platform opening.

What is a walk-through ladder?

A ladder whose rails extend 42 in above the landing so you step through the opening — the safest roof-access configuration.

Do you supply warning signage with the ladder?

Yes — warning labels for fall protection, inspection and load limits are available and specified in the drawing review.

Fixed Ladder Safety

Fixed Ladder Safety — Fall Protection & Inspection Checklist

Safety on a fixed ladder is decided before anyone climbs: the right fall protection for the height, a ladder built to the numbers, and a routine inspection that catches wear early.

Lockout matters too: before maintenance on or around the ladder, isolate energy sources and tag the ladder out. A safe ladder is built safe, inspected safe, and used safe — we cover the first part with compliant fabrication and full documentation.

Fixed Ladder Safety — FAQ

When does a fixed ladder need fall protection?

Above 24 ft (7.3 m) under OSHA 1910.28(b)(9) — with a cage or well on legacy ladders, and a PFAS or ladder safety system on new installations.

Is a cage or PFAS rail safer?

For new ladders OSHA requires PFAS above 24 ft — a rail arrests the fall, while a cage only limits it. On legacy plants a cage still satisfies the rule until 2036.

How often should a fixed ladder be inspected?

Visually before each use and monthly for rungs, anchors, and cage; a documented full inspection annually, plus PFAS checks per the manufacturer's schedule.

What makes a ladder "OSHA-compliant"?

Correct rung spacing (10–14″), 16″+ clear width, 7″+ rung clearance, 42″ rail extension, fall protection above 24 ft — and documentation proving it (DoC, calcs).

What safety documents come with the ladder?

Declaration of Conformity, MTC 3.1 material certificates, and structural calculations — including cage and PFAS rail components — with every order.
