California Compliance Focus

Cal OSHA Fixed Ladder

California enforces Title 8, which is often stricter than federal OSHA. The cal osha fixed ladder spec differs on rung pitch and clearances — we build to the tighter number.

Cal/OSHA Fixed Ladder Requirements vs Federal OSHA

California workplaces are regulated by Cal/OSHA under Title 8 of the California Code of Regulations, and for fixed ladders the key rule is Section 3277. It is tighter than federal OSHA in the dimensions that matter most: rung spacing must not exceed 12 in, while federal 1910.27 allows up to 14 in, and the required climbing clearance depends on the ladder angle — 36 in at 76° and 30 in at 90°.

On fall protection, California follows the same 2018 federal direction: fixed ladders installed after November 19, 2018 that rise more than 24 ft need a personal fall arrest system or a ladder safety system, and a cage alone no longer qualifies on new ladders. Existing caged ladders must be retrofitted by November 18, 2036. Because state-plan standards can add requirements, the safe approach is to design to the stricter of Title 8 and federal 1910.27 — which for rung spacing means the California number.

We build to both rule sets. Every US order ships with a DoC covering OSHA 1910.27 + ANSI A14.3, with the Title 8 §3277 dimensions checked against our spec sheet, plus MTC 3.1 and structural calcs.

Practice checklist for specifiers

  • Rung spacing - for California sites, keep rungs at 12 in or less — stricter than federal 10–14 in
  • Climbing clearance - 36 in at 76°, 30 in at 90°; confirm the angle-specific value with your engineer
  • New ladders over 24 ft - PFAS or ladder safety system; a cage no longer counts
  • Existing cages - retrofit before November 18, 2036
  • Documentation - DoC (OSHA 1910.27 + ANSI A14.3), Title 8 checked against our spec sheet, MTC 3.1, structural calcs

Cal/OSHA FAQ

What is the Cal/OSHA rule for fixed ladders?

Title 8, Section 3277 of the California Code of Regulations, which is generally stricter than federal 1910.27 on rung spacing and climbing clearances.

What is the Cal/OSHA rung spacing?

Rungs must be spaced no more than 12 in apart; federal OSHA allows 10–14 in, so the tighter California number governs for California sites.

How much clearance does Cal/OSHA require?

36 in on the climbing side at a 76° ladder angle and 30 in at 90°; confirm the exact value for your ladder angle with the engineer.

Does Cal/OSHA follow the federal 24 ft fall-protection rule?

California aligns with the 2018 federal timeline: new ladders over 24 ft need a PFAS or ladder safety system, and cages on existing ladders must be replaced by November 18, 2036.

Which standard do you build to for California orders?

Both — the DoC covers OSHA 1910.27 + ANSI A14.3, and the Title 8 §3277 dimensions are checked against our spec sheet on every order.

24ft PFAS Options

California 24ft Fall Protection

Fixed ladders in California that extend beyond 24 ft follow the same 2018 rule as federal OSHA — a personal fall arrest system or ladder safety system replaces the cage. We spec the rail on your drawings before fabrication.

What material suits a coastal California site?

SS304 or SS316 stainless for port and marine exposure with full MTC traceability; Q235B with 85-100 µm HDG covers inland plant and roof access.

Which California applications do you supply?

Roof and rooftop HVAC access, plant and warehouse runs with platforms, and stainless port and marine builds - each drawn and documented for the California inspector.

How fast can a California order ship?
