Fixed Ladder With Walk Thru Handrails
A fixed ladder with walk thru handrails keeps the climber inside the rail envelope until the moment they step through to the landing — no climbing over the side rail. The handrail extends past the top rung at 1.1 m exit height, and the opening is protected by a self-closing gate.
- Step through the opening instead of over the rail
- Handrail continues past the top rung for a secure grip
- Self-closing gate guards the opening when not in use
- Pre-assembled and fit-tested at our factory
Exit Engineering
Handrail at 1.1 m Exit Height
Code requires the climber to exit through a protected opening — we build the whole detail at the factory.
1.1 m Handrail
Exit height handrail per EN ISO 14122-4 and OSHA step-through convention.
Self-Closing Gate
Spring return gate closes the opening automatically after each exit.
Step-Through Width
Opening width to your drawing, typically 500–600 mm clear.
Fit-Tested
Gate, handrail and ladder assembled as one unit before shipping.
Choose Your Configuration
Fixed Ladder With Walk Thru Handrails Options & Configurations
Custom & standard options — every unit built to your drawing with full compliance documentation.

Walk-Thru Gate Kit
Self-closing swing gate that converts a plain top to a protected step-through exit. Retrofits existing ladder tops.

Handrail Extension
Raises an existing handrail to the 1.1 m exit height so a current ladder meets step-through code without a rebuild.

Walk-Thru at Platform
Step-through landing at an intermediate platform — handrail and gate pre-assembled into the platform section.

Common questions
10–25 ft (3–7.6 m) as standard; any height is engineered from your drawing with the free review.
Q235B steel, SS304/SS316 and 6063-T5 aluminum, with HDG 85–100 μm, pickled or painted — same Φ20 mm rung core.
Yes — SS304/SS316 walk-thru units for food, pharma and marine sites, with the same 1.1 m handrail and gate geometry.
1.5 kN (≈337 lbf) per rung — the gate, rails and brackets are verified in the structural calcs that ship with the order.

Exit Compliance Detail
Fixed Ladder With Walk Thru Handrails — Opening Clearance & Applications
A walk-thru ladder exits through an opening in the landing instead of stepping over the side rail. The handrail, opening clearance and gate are dimensioned together so the exit meets OSHA and EN ISO 14122-4 without field work.
| Walk-Thru Exit Specification | Standard Range | Custom / Code Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Side Rail Extension Above Landing | 42 in (1.07 m) | OSHA 1910.23(d)(10) — through / sidestep ladders |
| Handrail Height at Exit | 1.1 m (43 in) | EN ISO 14122-4 |
| Step-Through Opening Width | 500 – 600 mm clear | ≥ 600 mm recommended when tools or PPE are carried |
| Step-Across Distance (ladder to opening edge) | 180 – 250 mm | Per drawing; shortens the cross-over step |
| Handrail Grip Diameter | Φ32 – 38 mm | OSHA 1910.23(b) / EN ISO 14122-3 |
| Mid Rail | Half of top-rail height | OSHA 1910.23(b)(1) |
| Gate | Self-closing, 1.1 m high | OSHA 1910.28; spring return |
| Exit Rung Spacing | 280 mm / 11 in | ≤ 300 mm per OSHA |
| Load Rating | 1.5 kN per rung (≈337 lbf) | Guard and gate in structural calcs |
The 42 in Rule
Why the side rails keep climbing past the landing
OSHA 1910.23(d)(10) requires the side rails of through or sidestep ladders to extend 42 in (1.07 m) above the top landing. The climber keeps both hands on the rails while stepping through the opening — the gate then closes behind them. We build the rails, handrail and gate as one pre-assembled unit so the 42 in dimension is met on the first site visit, not after a rework.
- Through opening: the ladder passes through the landing — hands stay on the rails, tools stay in hand.
- Sidestep alternative: used where the floor is too tight for an opening; the climber steps around the extended rails.
Applications
Where walk-thru access earns its keep
- Roof access & parapet exits: step through the parapet opening instead of straddling the coping.
- Tank and silo tops: frequent access with tools — the hands-free exit is faster and safer.
- Mezzanine and equipment platforms: walk-thru landings keep the walkway clear of ladder traffic.
- Plant rooms and HVAC decks: standard 500 – 600 mm openings fit service routes with minimum floor cut-out.
Fixed Ladder With Walk Thru Handrails — Buyer FAQ
OSHA 1910.23(d)(10): the side rails of through or sidestep ladders must extend 42 in above the top level so the climber has a handhold through the whole exit movement.
500 – 600 mm clear is standard. Specify ≥ 600 mm if workers carry tools, wear bulky PPE or if rescue access through the opening is planned.
Factory-fitted. The self-closing gate is welded, sprung and adjusted at the factory, so the 1.1 m exit geometry arrives ready to pass inspection.
Roof and parapet access, tank tops, mezzanines and plant-room decks — anywhere the exit lands on a platform the climber must step onto with both hands occupied.
Yes — double walk-thru units are made to order from your drawing, with both openings guarded and gated, and both exits checked in the drawing review.
