Custom Step Angles

Fixed Ladder Stairs

A fixed step ladder is the middle ground between a vertical fixed ladder and a full staircase — treads instead of rungs, at a custom angle that fits the space. When a stair footprint is too big but a ladder is too steep, a fixed step ladder is the answer.

  • Custom angles from 60–75° — engineered to your riser, tread and landing geometry.
  • Step ladders to any height — with intermediate landings where the run demands it.
  • HDG steel step ladders, plus SS304 & SS316 for wet or clean environments.
  • Serrated or checker-plate treads — a firmer foot than rungs for regular traffic.

Choosing the Right Access

Fixed Step Ladder Options & Configurations

Three access types, one decision — which fits your space, traffic and budget.

Fixed Ladder

Vertical or near-vertical, 75–90°. Smallest footprint, climber faces the rungs.

Rungs Φ20

Fixed Step Ladder

Steep but walkable, 60–75°. Treads instead of rungs — the space-saving stair alternative.

Treads + handrail

Stairs

Comfortable 30–45°. Largest footprint — the right choice when floor area allows.

Our engineers help you pick — send the floor-to-floor height and available footprint, and we recommend the fixed step ladder angle and tread configuration.

Quick Answers

Common questions

What treads do you use on step ladders?

Serrated or chequer-plate steel treads (typically 3 mm), HDG or stainless, welded to the stringers at 45–60°.

Do step ladders include handrails?

Yes — handrails at 42 in and mid-rails are standard on step ladders per OSHA 1910.25, with guardrails on landings.

What is the standard step ladder width?

500 mm clear width between stringers as standard; wider configurations are custom-engineered to your drawing.

What load are stairs and steps rated for?

Steps rated 1.5 kN concentrated as standard (higher on request), verified by the structural calculation shipped with the unit.

Are the stairs pre-assembled before shipping?

Yes — every unit is trial-assembled in the factory, then split at bolted joints for container shipment with a layout drawing.

Ladder-Stair Requirements → Recommended Builds

The angle decides the product: 75° is a fixed ladder, 45–60° is a fixed step ladder, and 30–45° is a stair. Match your space, traffic and load to the combination below.

Scenario RequirementRecommended ConfigurationMaterial / Finish
Tight vertical spaces — shafts, tanks, limited footprintFixed ladder at 75°, Φ20 mm rungs at 280 mm, cage or PFAS rail over 24 ft (ISO 14122-4)HDG Q235B or SS316
Comfortable everyday climbing — platforms, mezzanines, plant roomsFixed step ladder at 45–60° with open or closed treads, handrails on both sides, rest platform at the topHDG Q235B / SS304
Two-way traffic with tools — frequent maintenance accessWider step ladder with serrated steel treads, mid-landing at half height, dual handrailsHDG, serrated treads
Carrying loads or trolleys — stores, workshops, equipment roomsStair configuration at 30–45° with 600 mm+ tread depth, landings at every change of direction (ISO 14122-3)Steel chequer or grating treads
Outdoor or washdown exposure — roofs, yards, process areasHDG 85–100 μm on all members, drainage holes on treads, no water traps in the framingQ235B, HDG 85–100 μm

Angle Decides the Tread

Below 75° the rung becomes a tread: at 60–75° we use open step-ladder treads, at 45–60° full treads with handrails, and below 45° a stair with landings. Send your floor-to-floor height and footprint — the angle, and therefore the build, follows.

Combining Ladders, Steps & Stairs

One access route can mix all three: a stair to a mid-platform, a step ladder to a mezzanine, a fixed ladder for the last vertical leg. Platforms and swing gates tie the segments together into one engineered unit.

Standards by Configuration

Stairs follow OSHA 1910.25 and ISO 14122-3; ladders follow OSHA 1910.23(d) and ISO 14122-4; alternating-tread units are permitted at 50–70° under OSHA 1910.25(b). We build and document to the standard that matches your chosen configuration.

Ladder-Stair Scenario FAQ

Fixed Ladder Stairs Questions

What angle range do you manufacture?

30–75°: fixed stairs at 30–45°, fixed step ladders at 45–60°, and fixed ladders at 75°. Custom angles within these bands are built to your footprint and floor-to-floor height.

What is the difference between a fixed ladder and ladder stairs?

Angle and tread. Ladders climb at 75° on rungs; step ladders at 45–60° on treads with handrails; stairs at 30–45° with deep treads and landings. Load, comfort and space each favour a different configuration.

Are alternating-tread step ladders OSHA approved?

Yes — alternating tread devices are permitted between 50° and 70° under OSHA 1910.25(b), for specific low-traffic applications. We'll confirm your use case against the standard before quoting.

Can stairs and ladders be combined in one unit?

Yes — stair-to-platform, platform-to-step-ladder, and final vertical legs are combined into one engineered access route with landings, guardrails and swing gates, supplied as a single fabricated unit.

What standards apply to fixed ladder stairs?

OSHA 1910.25 and ISO 14122-3 for stairs, OSHA 1910.23(d) and ISO 14122-4 for ladders, BS 4211 where specified. DoC, MTC 3.1 and structural calcs ship with every order.
