Well Design

Fixed Ladder Well

A fixed ladder well is the guarded opening or enclosure that surrounds the ladder where it passes through floors and landings. We fabricate the well with your ladder so the dimensions come from one drawing, not two vendors.

27–30 in clearance

Well opening sized per OSHA 1910.27 so the climber has full reach without pinch points.

Well + rest platform

Rest platforms integrated into the well run at the interval your local code requires.

Cage-style well enclosure

Full-height guarding option built from Φ700 mm cage hoops and rails.

Same factory, same fit

Well, ladder, cage and gate come as one engineered assembly.

Well Compliance

Compliance & DoCumentation (OSHA/BS 4211/EN ISO 14122-4)

  • OSHA 1910.27 — Well Rule
  • OSHA 1917.118 — Marine Terminals
  • ANSI A14.3 — Well Clearance
  • BS 4211 / EN ISO 14122-4
  • AS 1657 — Australian Compliance
OSHA 2018 update: fixed ladders over 24 ft installed after Nov 19, 2018 require a personal fall arrest system (PFAS) or ladder safety system — a cage alone no longer satisfies. Ask us for a PFAS-ready configuration.

Documentation Package

Every well order ships with complete documentation — no extra cost, no paywall.

  • Declaration of Conformity (DoC)
  • Material Test Certificates — EN 10204 3.1
  • Structural Calculations
  • Welding Procedure Specifications
  • Surface treatment certificates (HDG per ISO 1461)
All documents included free with every order.

Quick Answers

Common questions

Which standards set fixed ladder well dimensions?

OSHA 1910.27 and 1917.118 govern well dimensions for fixed ladders, and BS 4211 or EN ISO 14122-4 apply on UK/EU projects. We build to whichever standard your spec names and record it in the DoC.

What materials and finishes are ladder wells built in?

Q235B with hot-dip galvanizing (85–100 μm per ISO 1461), SS304 or SS316 — matched to your ladder so the enclosure and the climb share one material and finish.

Do solid-panel wells need ventilation?

Yes — solid-sided wells limit airflow, so we add vents to the panel layout per spec. Cage-style hoop and bar enclosures stay open by design; the drawing review confirms which you need.

How fast can I get a well quote?

Send your well opening size and ladder height — engineers return an itemized quote in 24 hours, free of charge. Production runs 15–25 working days after drawing approval.

What documents ship with a ladder well order?

A Declaration of Conformity, MTC 3.1 material certificates and structural calculations — included with every well order, referencing OSHA 1910.27 or 1917.118 as specified.

Fixed Ladder Wells

Fixed Ladder Wells — 27–30 in Clear Enclosure

A ladder well is the enclosure that surrounds the climb — and its inside width is regulated. We build wells to 27–30 in (686–762 mm) of clear climbing space, with rest platforms on long routes.

Well vs Cage — What Differs

FeatureWellCage
EnclosureClosed sides, 27–30 in clearOpen hoops, Φ700 mm
ClearanceDefined by inside widthDefined by hoop diameter
Typical useShafts, chimneys, enclosed routesTanks, silos, exposed walls
VentilationLimited — add vents per specOpen by design
Rest platformsRequired on long climbsPer height rule

A well built with the ladder means one supplier, one set of dimensions, one documentation pack — enclosure, rungs, platforms, and access hatch all coordinate on the same drawing. Minimum inside width stays 27 in; we build to 27–30 in so a harnessed climber fits comfortably.

Fixed Ladder Wells — FAQ

What is a fixed ladder well?

A well is the enclosure surrounding a fixed ladder — closed sides with 27–30 in of clear inside width, often with rest platforms on long climbs.

What is the minimum inside width of a ladder well?

27 in (686 mm) is the minimum required; we build 27–30 in of clear width so climbers — including those in a harness — have full clearance.

Does a well count as fall protection?

Yes — on legacy ladders a well is accepted fall protection above 24 ft, alongside cages; new ladders above 24 ft need a PFAS or ladder safety system.

How far apart should rest platforms be?

No more than 150 ft (45.7 m) apart on long climbs; we also fit intermediate platforms at project-specified heights.

Can a well be added to an existing ladder?

Yes — the enclosure is fabricated to the ladder's geometry and bolted or welded around it, with the same material and finish as the ladder.
