Europe & UK

BS 4211 & EN ISO 14122-4

BS 4211:2005+A1:2015 for permanently fixed ladders, EN ISO 14122-4 for machine-access, and HSE / Ministry of Labour routes for regulated sites.

Asia-Pacific

AS 1657 & SS 553

Australian and Singaporean markets use AS 1657 (fixed platforms, walkways, stairways and ladders) and SS 553. We build to the local standard and issue the matching DoC.

Which standard applies?

  • USA / Canada — OSHA 1910.27, ANSI A14.3, Cal/OSHA Title 8
  • UK — BS 4211 + HSE Work at Height Regs 2005
  • EU — EN ISO 14122-4, machine directive context
  • Australia — AS 1657
  • Singapore — SS 553 / Ministry of Labour

Unsure which applies? Send your drawings — we confirm the governing standard in the free engineering review.

Paperwork That Passes Inspection

Compliance DoCs: DoC, MTC, Calcs

  • Declaration of Conformity (DoC) to your standard
  • Material Test Certificates — EN 10204 3.1
  • Structural calculations with dimensional checks
  • Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS)
  • Surface treatment certificates (HDG per ISO 1461)

PFAS point to flag on every project

For ladders installed after Nov 19, 2018 over 24 ft, a cage alone no longer satisfies OSHA 1910.27 — you need a PFAS or ladder safety system. We flag the trigger point on your drawing and quote the PFAS-ready rail so there is no surprise during inspection.

Free drawing review — we check the 24 ft trigger and cage-to-PFAS path before you commit.

Quick Answers

Common questions

Which standard applies to my market?

USA: OSHA 1910.27 + ANSI A14.3; UK: BS 4211; Europe: EN ISO 14122-4; Australia: AS 1657:2018; Singapore: SS 553:2016. Tell us the destination and we build and document to the right standard.

Can one ladder meet multiple standards?

Yes — most of our ladders are designed to the strictest applicable requirements and documented against several standards in the order-level DoC. Welding follows ISO 5817 Level C with ISO 9606-1 certified welders and ISO 15614-1 WPQR.

Do you provide compliance documents?

Yes — every shipment includes a Declaration of Conformity (ISO 17050-1), MTC (EN 10204 3.1), weld inspection records and structural calculations, free of charge. Third-party inspection is available on request.

What changed in OSHA 1910.27 for new ladders?

Since November 19, 2018, new fixed ladders over 24 ft must have a personal fall arrest system (PFAS) or a ladder safety system — cages alone no longer count for new installs. Existing caged ladders have a transition period until November 18, 2036.

Is your ladder CE certified?

EN ISO 14122-4 is the harmonized standard for machine access under the Machinery Directive, but fixed building ladders have no mandatory CE certification scheme. We state "complies with EN ISO 14122-4" and issue order-level DoCs instead of claiming CE.
