OSHA Fixed Ladder Guidelines

The rules that decide rung spacing, fall protection and platform placement — answered with the code numbers and our build data.

What are the OSHA fixed ladder guidelines?

The core 1910.27 guidelines are: rungs spaced 10–14 in (25–36 cm) apart, a minimum climbing width of 16 in (41 cm), fall protection above 24 ft for new installations, and landing platforms at least every 50 ft on tall ladders. Everything we fabricate is checked against these four.

What is the fixed ladder 24 ft rule?

Under 1910.27, a fixed ladder extending more than 24 ft — installed after November 19, 2018 — must have a personal fall arrest system (PFAS) or a ladder safety system. A cage alone no longer satisfies the rule. We quote PFAS-ready rails and cage configurations side by side so you can choose.

What rung spacing do the fixed ladder standards require?

OSHA 1910.27 requires rungs from 10 to 14 in (25–36 cm) center-to-center. BS 4211 and EN ISO 14122-4 accept the same pitch. Our standard 280 mm (11″) spacing sits inside the band with margin — and we never exceed 300 mm.

Where does the safety cage start and end?

Per 1910.27, a cage starts 7–8 ft above the base of the ladder and extends 42 in above the top landing or access level. We set the hoop spacing and Φ700 mm cage diameter to those reference points on every caged build.

How often do rest platforms need to appear?

Fixed ladders more than 50 ft tall need a landing platform at least every 50 ft, with platforms and clearances engineered into the structural calcs. We supply the landings as part of the same package, so there is one fabricator and one set of drawings.

What is the minimum climbing width?

OSHA 1910.27 sets a minimum climbing width of 16 in (41 cm). Our standard clear width of 500 mm (19.7″) exceeds it by almost 4 in, giving comfortable clearance for boots, gloves and tools.

Do I need a cage or a PFAS?

It depends on height and install date. Under 24 ft a cage may be optional on some sites; above 24 ft on a new install you need a PFAS or ladder safety system. Send us the height and we quote both options with the DoC, so the choice is on paper before you order.

The Fixed Ladder Standards Checklist

Four Numbers Every Inspector Checks

Audit your existing ladder against these. If any of the four fail, the ladder is out of code — and we can quote the replacement.

Rung Spacing

10–14 in center-to-center. Our 280 mm / 11″ pitch holds the band with margin on every ladder.

Fall Protection

Above 24 ft on new installs — PFAS or ladder safety system. Cage alone is no longer enough.

Cage Position

Starts 7–8 ft above base, extends 42 in past the top landing. Φ700 mm diameter to match.

Rest Platforms

Ladders over 50 ft need a landing every 50 ft, engineered and shipped with the run.

Fixed Ladder Standards by Configuration

Different heights and fall-protection rules lead to different configurations. Here is how the standards map onto the build.

Quick Answers

Common questions

What four numbers do inspectors check first?

Rung spacing (10–14 in center-to-center), fall protection above 24 ft, cage position relative to the landing, and rest platforms over 50 ft — we build to all four.

Where does a safety cage start and end?

Cages start 7–8 ft above the base and extend 42 in past the top landing, at Φ700 mm (≈29 in) inside diameter.

When are rest platforms required?

Ladders over 50 ft need a landing every 50 ft — we engineer and ship the landing as part of the run.

Can one ladder meet both US and EU guidelines?

Yes — we build to OSHA 1910.27, ANSI A14.3, BS 4211, EN ISO 14122-4 and AS 1657, so a single run can be dimensioned for both markets.

What rung load do the guidelines require?

Rungs are engineered for 1.5 kN (≈337 lbf) per rung per EN ISO 14122-4, with 500 mm (19.7 in) clear width — verified in the structural calcs.

Fixed Ladder Standards

OSHA Fixed Ladder Guidelines & Standards — What Applies

Three rules govern most fixed ladder jobs: OSHA 1910.23 (construction and dimensions), OSHA 1910.28 (fall protection), and ANSI A14.3 / EN ISO 14122-4 for design and testing. Here is the short version.

Guideline in one line: build to the numbers, document everything, and choose fall protection by the date the ladder goes into service. Our engineers review your drawing free of charge and flag any clause your ladder must meet — OSHA, BS 4211, EN ISO 14122-4, or AS 1657.

Fixed Ladder Guidelines — FAQ

What are the main OSHA fixed ladder guidelines?

Uniform rung spacing of 10–14″, minimum 16″ clear width, at least 7″ behind the rungs, 42″ rail extension, and fall protection above 24 ft (OSHA 1910.23 & 1910.28).

When does OSHA require fall protection on a fixed ladder?

When the climb exceeds 24 ft above a lower level — a cage, well, or personal fall arrest system is required (OSHA 1910.28(b)(9)).

Are safety cages still accepted under the new OSHA rules?

Only on ladders in service before November 19, 2018, and only until November 18, 2036. New ladders above 24 ft must use a PFAS or ladder safety system.

What is the maximum rung spacing allowed?

14″ (356 mm) center to center under OSHA; our standard 280 mm (11″) pitch sits safely inside that window.

What documentation should a compliant ladder ship with?

A Declaration of Conformity, MTC 3.1 material certificates, and structural calculations referencing the applicable standard — included with every order.
